About the Artist

Sean Joy Cabanig is a fifth year student in Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in the metals program here in Cal State Long Beach. She is from Los Angeles, California and has been living in Long Beach for most of her college life, two years dormed at Cal State Long Beach. She has two older siblings, both guys, the oldest is 31 and they other is 29. She has a boyfriend whom she likes cooking with, eating with and hanging out with, especially playing the video game Halo. At first she was into creative writing like poetry, then she attended SOAR and was introduced to studio art. She then picked up some interest in metals.

Formal Analysis

He art work was all metal. There was many interesting pieces with all sorts of shapes. The majority were smooth with curved edges. She didn’t add any color to the metals, if they were made with silver they were silver and if they were made with copper they we copper. She doesn’t have a specific size on her work, they actually varied. Most of here pieces were something that you could wear around your neck, wrist or even your fingers because they were jewelry. Except the penises.

Content Analysis

Almost all of the pieces of art she created was made out of the silver. But some were made from copper. She said the reason she uses silver is because it is precious and it is a metal that could be melted way easier. Sean describes that making a piece out of silver takes major focus. She mentioned that her work is very experimental which I had no idea what she meant by that. Lastly, she told us that she wants to go around the world and look at different cultures for inspiration that can help her create new pieces.

Synthesis/Formal Analysis

Well since she was the only artist at the art gallery I went to check out her work. Before speaking to her I went into her gallery and was amazed. Her work was very beautiful and I enjoyed the name of the gallery the most “All Work, All Play”. I did feel a little awkward when I came across the penises. I didn’t understand why they were there so I went outside to ask questions.
